Pound 13 Coeburn 12

In what has become maybe the LPD's most thrilling contest in any given year, the Pound Wildcats pulled yet another upset over the Coeburn Blue Knights by a 13-12 count. Pound's Kevin Payne provided the winning score as he returned a Coeburn kickoff for a 77 yard TD with only 1:52 remaining just after Coeburn had taken a 12-7 lead on a 29 yard pass from Brandon Hale to Ryan Lawson. Pound opened the scoring in the 1st quarter as Payne scored from 4 yards out, and the PAT gave the Cats a 7-0 lead. Coeburn came right back to cut it to 7-6 when Anthony Gray scooted in from 33 yards away, but the PAT was blocked, and that proved to be fatal in the end. After the two teams played a scoreless 2nd & 3rd quarters, the 4th provided some fireworks. Coeburn capped a late game drive as Brandon Hale hit Ryan Lawson with a 29 yard TD pass to give the Blue Knights a 12-7 lead. The try for 2 failed, leaving Coeburn with a precarious 12-7 lead with 1:52 remaining. That set the stage for Payne's dramatic 77 yard TD return. Coeburn got one last chance, but was unable to mount a drive. With the win, Pound moves to 2-0 in the LPD & 3-0 overall. Next week the Cats will host Powell Valley in a huge game, as both come in undefeated. Coeburn falls to 1-1 overall & 1-1 in the LPD, and has an equally huge game as they host Clintwood next week.

J.J.Kelly 14 J.I.Burton 6

The Kelly Indians continued to show that they're a program on the rise as they topped arch-rival Burton 14-6. Gabe Barnette gave the Indians a 6-0 lead in the 1st quarter as he scampered in from 9 yards out. Burton came right back as John Hunter hauled in a 8 yard pass from Matt Ward to tie it at 6-6. In the 2nd quarter Kelly took the lead for good as Adam Dotson caught a 41 yard TD pass from QB Tommy Asbury. Shannon Hall's 2 point PAT run gave the Indians a 14-6 halftime lead. In spite of a fine night from QB Matt Ward (17-30-1 266 yds), Burton failed to dent the end zone again, and Kelly continued to move the ball & eat the clock, and hang on for the win. Kelly moves to 1-2 in the LPD & 1-2 overall, and will travel to Rye Cove next week. Burton falls to 1-1 in the LPD and 1-2 overall and will host Garden next week.

Clintwood 14 Appalachia 6

The Clintwood Greenwave traveled to Appalachia as heavy favorites, but found out that there's nothing meaner than a big old Dawg that's been backed into a corner as they left town with a 14-6 win. Appalachia opened the game in traditional fashion, as they mounted a grinding 15 play 63 yard drive that took almost 8 minutes as Josh Fleenor crashed in from the 1 with 4:22 left in the 1st to give the Dawgs a 6-0 lead. Clintwood stuck back on their possession though as Justin Hamilton scooted over from the 4 with 2:33 left to give the Wave a 7-6 lead with Brandon Meade's PAT kick. From ther on out though it was a struggle. Clintwood was able to move the ball well, but penalties & turnovers along with a tough as nails Appy defense kept this one in doubt until the end. In the 4th quarter, Hamilton intercepted Mabe's pass at the Clintwood 15, and the Wave mounted a 16 play 85 yard drive that ended when QB Dan Linkous dove in from a yard away with 3:02 left to play to seal the 14-6 win. Hamilton intercepted another pass late to end any hopes of a Dawg comeback. With the win, Clintwood moves to 1-0 in the LPD & 3-0 overall. The Wave will travel to Coeburn next week for a big LPD matchup with Coeburn. Appy falls to 0-2 in the LPD and 0-3 overall and will host Lee next week.

Powell Valley 42 Richlands 6

Powell Valley traveled to Richlands to face a defense that had yeilded only a total of 57 yards total in games against Tazwell & Lee. Putting their 29 game winning streak on the line, the Vikings rolled up their sleeves and did some damage to the Tornado's defensive stats as they gobbled up 477 yards of total offense as they rang up a 42-6 win in front of a big crowd at Richlands. PV got started early as they drove 70 yards with Josh Callahan racing in from 25 yards away for a 7-0 lead. After a Richlands fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Derrick Clark bulled over from the 5 for a 14-0 lead. The Tornado was able to thwart another PV scoring threat, and mounted a nice 85 yard drive that was capped by Travis Brown's 16 yard run to cut it to 14-6. PV drove deep into Tornado territory only to be turned away both times before taking a 14-6 lead into the half. After that it was all PV as the Vikings took control behing their offensive line and hard running from Callahan, Jimmy Yonce, and Scott Williams who was filling in for Clark who injured his ankle in the 2nd quarter. The running game, and timely passing from JT Wells took PV down the field on a 75 yard drive that ate up nearly half of the 3rd quarter and was capped by Matt Dickenson's 4 yard TD catch from Wells to make it 21-6. Still in the 3rd, Well hit TE Michael Stidham on a beautiful 64 yard TD pass to make it 28-6. Then early in the 4th, Williams capped another drive by going over from the 5 to make it 35-6. PV soph. Sheldon Adams capped the scoring on a 81 yard run with about 5 minutes left. With the win PV moves to 2-0 overall, and will travel to Pound next week to face the undefeated Wildcats.
