Appalachia 35 Rye Cove 18

The Dawgs proved the naysayers who said they didn't belong in the playoffs wrong as they pounded Cumberland District Champ Rye Cove 35-18. The Dawgs got opened the game up after a scoreless 1st quarter when Tyrell Hardison raced in from 55 yards to make it 7-0 as Chris Papst added the PAT. Later in the quarter Josh Fleenor took a pass from QB Brad Barnette and rambled 36 yards to paydirt for a 14-0 Appy lead at the half. Disaster struck for the Eagles when they fumbled the 2nd half kickoff and Fleenor made them pay as he scored froma yard out tomake it 21-0. The Cove got back into it briefly as Eric McPherson hauled in a 74 yard TD pass from Mike Edwards to cut it to 21-6. Still in the 3rd the Eagles drew even closer at 21-12 as Mike Berry scored from 23 yards out. The Dawgs would pull away once again though as Fleenor scored again on a 10 yard run to make it 28-12 after three quarters. In the 4th, Rye Cove scored again as Edwards went over from a yard out to make it 28-18. Fleenor capped the Appy scoring by rumbling 36 yards for the Dawgs final TD.

With the win the Dawgs move to 4-7 and earned a spot in the Region D Division 1 finals against arch-rival J.I. Burton next week.

Burton 34 Twin Springs 12

The Burton Raiders moved on to the Region D title game by thumping Twin Springs 34-12. The Raiders got off to a fast start as Reggie Sensabaugh blocked a Titan punt on the first series to put the Raiders in business at the 23. Four plays later Sensabaugh took it over from a yard out to make it 6-0. Twin Springs responed with a drive of their own as Gary Chaffin scooted in from the 20 to tie it at 6-6. Burton had an answer for everything today though and Sam Keys put the Raiders on top 14-6 still in the 1st quarter as he scored on a 3 yard run and Jon Hunter took a 2 point PAT pass from Matt Ward. The 2nd quarter was all Titans as th Raiders only ran 6 plays from scrimmage and had 2 turnovers. The Titans however could only muster 6 points on a Mike Keith 3 yard TD run to cut the Burton lead to 14-12 at the half. The 2nd half was all Burton as the Raider defense held the Titans to 57 total yards. Jazz Coleman put the Raiders up 21-12 on a 13 yard run going into the 4th, and Reggie Sensabaugh iced the game with a 14 yard run to make it 27-12. Quinn Smith added the final Burton TD on a 3 yard run. The Raiders move to 6-5 on the year and fac old rival Appalachia for the Region D title next week.

Clintwood 35 Haysi 20

The Clintwood Greenwave dispatched Dickenson Co. rival Haysi 35-20 to advance to the Region D Division 2 finals. The game was a little closer than the 1st meeting earlier in the season, but the Wave offense was on a roll as they ground out 386 yards of total offense on the day and the defense rose to the occasion several times to stop Haysi drives. Haysi got off to a fast start as they took the opening possession 69 yards with QB John Salyers covering the final 10 on the ground. Salyers PAT made it 7-0. Clintwood answered with Justin Hamilton who ran in from 8 yards out to tie the score with Brandon Green's PAT. In the 2nd quarter Hamilton put the Wave in front as he scored again from 4 yards out to make it 14-7. Tiger QB John Salyers was banged up and reserve QB Nathan Hall hit WR Robbie Colley on a 18 yard TD pass to tie the game at 14-14. Still in the 2nd quarter Hamilton hauled in a 15 yard TD pass from Green to make it 21-14 at the half.

The Wave continued to dominate the line of scrimmage as BJ Davis capped a 3rd quarter drive by going over from 3 yards out to extend the lead to 28-14. In the 4th quarter Brandon Green capped a 17 play 86 yard drive by scooting in from the 6 for the Wave's final TD. Haysi added a score late on a 2 yard TD pass from Salyers to Corey Bostic for the final of 35-20. With the win the Wave moves to 10-1 on the year and will face LPD rival Powell Valley next week for the Region D Division 2 title.

Powell Valley 38 Honaker 19

The Powell Valley Vikings rolled to their 25 win in a row by rolling over Honaker 38-19. PV struck first as Julius Jones dove in from 2 yards out to make it 6-0 as the PAT was missed. Honaker suprised the Vikings by taking the next possession and moving 72 yards to score as QB Heath Miller hit Dustin Deel on a 4 yard TD pass on 4th down to give the Tigers a brief 7-6 lead. It was all downhill for Honaker from there. PV answered with a drive of their own as Jones scored from 4 yards out to make it 12-7 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Killer D took the game over and only allowed the Tigers 6 rushing yards until the reserves flooded the field. With 5 minutes to go in the half QB Jake Stepp connected with Mike Prewitt on a 12 yard TD pass to make it 18-7. PV's Jimmy Yonce had yet another brilliant punt return nullified by a penalty just before halftime and PV went to the half leading 18-7. The Vikings put the game out of reach at the start of the 3rd as they took the opening kick and used 11 plays before Jones scored from the 1 to make it 25-7 as JT Wells added the PAT. Still in the 3rd quarter Viking FB Victor Williams raced for 51 of his 152 rushing yards to the end zone to make it 32-7 going into the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter was less than 1 minute old when Stepp hit WR John Williams with a 30 yard TD pass to make it 38-7. The Tigers managed to score 2 TD in the final 4 minutes on the PV reserves to make the final 38-19. With the win PV moves to 11-0 and will face Clintwood as the Vikings try to win their 5th consecutive Region D title.
