LPD Tournament Action of 5/20/1999

At Pound Appalachia overcame a 4-0 Coeburn lead with 6 runs in the 4th, and 4 more in the 5th for an 11-8 win over the Blue Knights and the LPD tournament title. April Sloan had 4 hits while Erica Varner added 2 RBI for the Dawgs. Brooke Dotson was 3-4 & 2 RBI for Coeburn, which now faces Honaker at 1PM on Tueday in the 1st round of the Region D tournament at Castlewood. Appalachia will face the Cumberland District runnerup at 4PM.

LPD Tournament Action of 5/19/1999

Ashley Collins pitched a 1 hit shutout as Coeburn edged Kelly 2-0 in the 1st semifinal game of the LPD tournament. Coeburn pushed across 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to provide the winning runs. Nicki Skeens pitched well in defeat for Kelly as she allowed only 4 hits. Coeburn will face Appalachia Thursday night for the LPD title.

In the 2nd game, Appalachia's Lindsey Mabe shut out Powell Valley on 3 hits as the Dawgs advanced to the title game by topping the Vikings 4-0. Sheri Flanery pitched well for PV as she limited Appy to 2 hits.

LPD tournament action of 5/17/1999

The LPD tournament got underway at Pound as Kelly rallied with 2 runs in the 6th to edge Burton 9-8. Laramie Wilson had 2 hits and Nicki Skeens got the win on the mound. Laura McNew had 3 hits and Fabian Blair added 2 for the Raiders. Kelly will face Coeburn on Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals.

Powell Valley blanked Pound 9-0 as Jessica Witt and Brandi Collins got 3 hits each to lead a 12 hit attack for the Vikings. PV will play Appalachia on Wednesday in the semifinals.

Action of 5/14/1999

At Big Stone Gap, Powell Valley lost a 2-1 decision to Jenkins, KY 2-1. PV's Sheri Flanery pitched well, giving up only two hits & striking out 5, but Jenkins pitcher April Damon also gave up two hits & fanned 11 while walking none.

Action of 5/13/1999

At Coeburn, Sasha Turner had a double and a triple and scored 2 runs as Coeburn edged Appalachia 4-3 to win the regular season LPD title. Kelli Whited had a triple and two RBI as well. Ashley Collins got the win while stiking out nine. Mandy Turner tripled and Erica Varner doubled for Appy. Coeburn earned a bye in the 1st round of next weeks LPD tournament at Pound.

At St.Paul, Powell Valley scored 12 runs in the top of the 7th as the Vikings topped St.Paul 25-18. Leslie Phillips hit a grand slam to key the outburst. Difference in the game was the PV defense that had only 2 errors compared to 9 by the Deacons.

Action of 5/10/1999

At Coeburn, Ashley Collins fanned 12 as Coeburn downed Burton. Chastity Clark, Kelli Whited, and Collins paced a 16 hit Blue Knight attack.

At Ben Hur, Appalachia bombed Lee 30-3 behind 1 hit pitching from several pitchers and Laura Sizemore cranked a 2 run homer and had 5 RBI. Lindsay Mabe had 3 hits for the Dawgs as well.

At Big Stone Gap, the Kelly Indians topped PV 14-7 behind Laramie Wilson's 2 hits & 5 RBI. Jessica Witt had 2 RBI for the Vikings.

Action from 4/22/1999

At Pound, Kelly's Nicki Skeens tossed a no hitter as the Indians blanked Pound 16-0 in 5 innings. Skeens also had 3 hits and scored 4 runs. Laramie Wilson & Amanda Ellison had two hits each as well.

At Norton, Appalachia's Laura Sizemore went 3-4 with a solo homer as the Dawgs downed Burton 14-7. Lindsey Mabe got the win as Appy moved to 10-1 overall. Candace McNew and Laura McNew had 2 hits apiece for the Raiders.

At Coeburn, Summer Meade had 2 hits, including the game winning 2 run single in the bottom of the 7th as the Blue Knights edged Powell Valley 6-5. Mead was also the winning pitcher. Ashley Collins had 2 hits for the Vikings..

Action of 4/21/1999

The Burton Raiders made it two wins in two days as they edged Lee 7-6. Relief pitcher Fabian Blair worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the 7th inning to preserve the win. Burton trailed 6-0 heading into the 5th, but erupted for all 7 runs in the inning.

Action of 4/20/1999

The Burton Raiders outslugged Kelly 21-16 as Elizabeth Sowden and Candace McNew each had 3 hits. Julie Adkins had three hits for Kelly, but the Indians couldn't overcome the 12 errors they commited.

Action of 4/19/1999

The Coeburn Blue Knights pulled even in the LPD race by downing league leading Apalachia 12-7. The Blue Knights scored 5 in the first and 4 in the seventh as they capitalized on 5 Dawg errors. Brooke Dotson went 4-5 at the plate and Ashley Collins pitched a complete game for the win. Appy's Laura Sizemore had two doubles, and April Sloan homered for the Dawgs.

At Wise, J.J.Kelly 22 runs in the first two innings in a 29-10 rout of Twin Springs. Nicki Skeens and Ashley Bolling each went 3-5 and Amanda Ellison & Jessica Kudirka had two hits apiece. Ashley Dowdy got the win on the mound as Kelly improved to 3-4.

At Rye Cove, Andrea Jessee led 6 players with two hit each as the Eagles blasted Powell Valley 14-4. It was actually a tight game heading into the bottom of the 5th, when the Cove scored 10 runs to end the game.
